Career Transitions Aren’t Linear—Here’s the SHIFTS Framework That Helped Me Navigate Mine

Careers rarely follow a straight path—they twist, turn, and sometimes take us completely by surprise. Whether you're stepping into an exciting new opportunity or navigating an unexpected change, transitions can feel overwhelming. New environments, unfamiliar expectations, and different stakeholders all demand adjustment. I’ve been there—first as a new manager, then as a career and executive coach. What got me through? A structured yet deeply personal approach I call SHIFTS.

S – Self-Assess
Reflect on your motivations, values, strengths, and what you want from your next career.

H – Highlight Transferable Skills
Identify and showcase the skills and experiences you can bring to your new field.

I – Investigate Options
Research industries, roles, and required qualifications. Network and gather insights.

F – Fill Skill Gaps
Upskill with courses, certifications, or hands-on experience to meet your target role’s requirements.

T – Take Action
Update your resume and online profiles, start applying, and adapt your plan as you progress.

S – Safeguard Your Wellbeing
Prepare for the financial and emotional aspects of transition. Create a financial plan, build a support network, and practice resilience to manage uncertainty and stress.

Looking back, the effort was more than worth it—this framework didn’t just help me switch roles, it helped me reclaim my purpose and confidence. And while SHIFTS gave me direction, I couldn’t have done it alone. Having trusted peers and coaches walk alongside me made all the difference. If you’re in the middle of a career transition, know this: with the right mindset, strategy, and support, you won’t just survive the change—you’ll thrive because of it.
