The Audience You Forgot You Had

She knew her companies better than anyone. She just never told half the floor.

She was an excellent growth analyst, and when she presented to the growth portfolio managers, the ideas landed. The value managers sat thirty metres away. She'd never presented to them, it hadn't occurred to her that she had anything they needed. Then one of them stopped her in the corridor and asked about a company she'd covered for three years. She answered.

"I didn't know you followed this." He'd never thought to ask. She'd never thought to tell him.

This isn't a networking failure, it's a translation miss. She knew how to describe that company one way: the runway, the reinvestment rate, the market share ahead. She'd never described it the other way: the margin of safety, the cash return, the quality of earnings. The work was identical, the framing was not.

Most of us communicate our value in one register. Usually to the people who already understand it, our manager, our immediate team. Rarely across, to the people solving a different version of the same problem, who'd find the work valuable if it arrived in their language.

The footprint stays small, not because the work is limited but because the translation never happened.

So she started translating. She began sending the occasional read to a manager she'd never previously have thought to copy, framed the way he thought rather than the way she did. A margin-of-safety line instead of a growth-runway line. The same companies with a different register.

Three months on, he stopped at her desk to ask what she made of a name he was looking at, because he'd started to think of her coverage as something he could use. Then another did the same. Her calendar filled with conversations that wouldn't have existed a quarter earlier. She wasn't doing more work. The same work was simply reaching more people.

That's the shape of the return. Recognition, from people who'd never known to ask.

Communication multiplies the impact of your return.

Who is doing work right now that would be valuable to you, if only they'd described it in your language? And who are you, to someone else, in exactly that position?
