When No One is Paying Attention
You know the moment. A piece of work crosses your desk that no one is really going to check. Not the board paper. Not the deck for the meeting that matters. The one that gets skimmed at best. And the pull to do just enough is real.
That pull is worth paying attention to. An audience imposes a standard. The senior PM's interest, the investor's engagement, the quarterly review, these impose discipline and give us genuine affirmation. Remove that gaze and most people's rigour quietly adjusts, not because they are lazy, but because working without feedback asks something most environments never ask of you.
Early in my career in London, I watched an analyst cover sectors the market had moved on from. Ignored territory, no investor attention, no morning meeting buzz. His models stayed precise, the analysis stayed sharp. His standard held when nobody was checking it.
When his sector finally caught momentum, the work was ready. The return was not created by the timing but was revealed by it.
There is a version of this in every career. The preparation you do before anyone knows the opportunity is coming. The standard you hold not because someone is reviewing it, but because it is yours. The thinking you do not shortcut because the work deserves it.
That is what compounds.
This week's ROE Letter is about what the quiet periods are building towards, and why the scorecard is often measuring the wrong variable.

When the recognition around your work last disappeared, what happened to the standard? If it held, something internal was carrying it. If it slipped, you have just found what was.
