Leading Through Double Binds: Why Authenticity Matters

If you’ve ever led a team, you’ve likely faced a double bind—those moments where expectations pull you in opposite directions, and no choice feels “right.”

One I faced often was balancing aggressive deadlines with genuine care for my team’s well-being. In fast-paced investing, the pressure is constant. There’s always more data, more decisions, more urgency. Early on, I thought pushing harder was the only way to deliver results. But over time, I learned that advocating for rest, encouraging open conversations, and supporting mental health didn’t slow us down—it built resilience. When people feel seen and valued, their commitment deepens.

Another bind? The leadership tightrope many women walk: Be assertive, but not too assertive. Be warm, but not too emotional. Early in my career, I felt pulled between these conflicting expectations. Eventually, I stopped trying to “perfectly” balance the scale and chose authenticity. For me, that meant making tough calls with clarity while staying grounded in empathy and collaboration. The shift wasn’t just freeing—it built trust.

Here’s what I’ve learned: Double binds don’t require us to become different people for different situations. They require us to lead with intention, self-awareness, and courage—on our own terms.

I’d love to hear from others: What double binds have you faced as a leader? How did you navigate them?

Let’s share and learn from each other.
