When the Going Gets Tough
We’re in a season where change feels constant. Economic shifts and AI disruption are reshaping industries, making job searches and career transitions more challenging than ever. Many professionals I’ve spoken with share the same struggle: staying positive and purposeful in the face of uncertainty.
I know the feeling. After moving from corporate life into coaching, I was excited about the new chapter—but I quickly realised the reality of transition. The slower pace was disorienting. Prospective clients said no more often than yes. And some days, it felt like every setback carried more weight than it should.
Here are three principles that have helped me—and may help you if you’re navigating your own transition:
🌍 Recognise you’re not alone
Six in ten Singapore workers say their job search has become harder over the past year (LinkedIn, Jan 16). That reminder stopped me from turning struggle into self-blame. Extend yourself the same grace you would a friend weathering a storm.
💡 Reset priorities outside of work
The loss of a steady paycheck can feel destabilising. But shifting focus to what brings you joy can be grounding. For me, it was family dinners, reconnecting with old friends, and allowing myself space to enjoy the slower moments. What would it look like for you?
🔄 Stay flexible and widen the net
Transitions open doors we might not have seen before. I discovered my coaching skills could extend beyond one-on-one sessions into workshops—an adjustment that created new opportunities.
Uncertainty is never easy. But by reframing it—with compassion, perspective, and adaptability—we create space for resilience and growth.
✨ A reflection for you: What’s one small shift that could help you navigate change more effectively this month?
